Australasia's first Hong Kong style live seafood restaurant opens at Auckland Fish Market

An Auckland Fish Market retailer has launched Australasia's first seafood restaurant to offer authentic Hong Kong style dining.
Live Fish, which stocks New Zealand's widest range of live seafood, recently opened Dai Pai Dong. Roughly translated from Cantonese as 'Big Food Stall', the restaurant's format will be familiar to people who have dined out in Hong Kong.
Patrons simply select their seafood live from the tank, which is then immediately prepared and cooked. The outdoor-style dining premises are very basic and informal, with the emphasis firmly placed on top quality seafood.
Owner Joe Mok says Dai Pai Dong is a highly authentic Hong Kong style dining experience that, until now, has not been available in Australia or New Zealand because no one apart from Live Fish stocks such a wide range of live seafood.
No menu is available, although one is being developed to assist Kiwi patrons unfamiliar to this style of dining. Instead, patrons either advise the chef of their preferred Cantonese cooking style or simply leave it up to the chef's interpretation.
Typically the seafood will be prepared in several different ways so that nothing is wasted, and to provide patrons with a choice of dishes. Vegetable, rice and noodle side dishes are also available upon request.
Prices vary accordingly to the type and weight of seafood chosen. Mr Mok says a table of four who include crayfish as a choice would typically pay around $50 a head for a full meal.
Dai Pai Dong is currently applying for a liquor license. Non alcoholic beverages are available upon request. The restaurant's popularity means that bookings are advised. It is open daily from 6 pm until late.
Auckland Fish Market Manager Nigel Thomas says the Dai Pai Dong fits well with the market's aim to be an innovative way for consumers to buy New Zealand's most extensive range of seafood and other food products. "Dai Pai Dong not only adds a new dimension to the market's current café offerings, but to Auckland dining in general."
