The Auction for Buyers
|
Auckland Fish Market operates New Zealand's only 'Dutch auction' for seafood. This system has resulted in many positive changes for the retail and restaurant trade, and consumers alike.
The auction system enables all buyers to have equal access to the daily seafood catch. This means that, even in the quieter winter season, plenty of seafood is available to all trade - and their customers.
The auction typically sells in excess of 20 tonnes of seafood a day, which is provided by around 80 suppliers.

How the auction works
The auction room has seating and consoles for 85 buyers, looking out over an auction floor that can accommodate more than 3000 fish bins offering a wide range of species - typically 40 on any given day. Registered buyers can view the seafood available for auction each morning from 0530 hours.
|
| The auction, which takes place at 0600 hours every weekday, involves a large bidding 'clock' that displays a description of each lot on offer. The auctioneer starts the clock about $2 above the price per kilo that each lot is expected to receive, and the price drops every ten seconds until a buyer stops it by entering a bid on their keypad. The buyer's name appears on the clock to confirm the price and the quantity of the transaction. |
 |
Members of the public are welcome to attend the auction, and a viewing gallery has been provided this purpose.
The registration and payment process is as follows:
All buyers are required to register. Click here to open a registration form.
After registering, buyers receive a personal buyer chip card number that is used to log in when bidding.
There are two types of buyers, cash buyers and account buyers. A cash buyer pays for their purchases each day before taking the fish. An account buyer is given seven day payment terms. Account buyers supply us with a bank guarantee or bond of 1.5 weeks of their normal seafood purchases, which is used to set their credit limit.
The auction system keeps a tally of purchases made and the remaining credit available to the buyer each day.
Payment terms are strictly seven days.
Training on how to participate in the auction is available for all new buyers.
